| This is probably again an issue with a fine line, where it crosses from mainstream to porn. So let's start at the start. Which would Pamella Lee Anderson..
Her bio at PopStarPlus states 'Noteworthy was her relationship with Kid Rock, which is most remembered by the "unauthorized" release of their infamous sex tape in 2002'. Now, at that time, the term 'WardRobe Malfunction' hadn't entered the popular lexicon as yet, and there's no boubt about the genuiness of the whole incident. Entire porn sites were built around the tape, but still, it was something which happened in the natural course of events, dictated by market demand. Now forward a couple of years, and what do we have - Paris Hilton, Janet Jackon, Tom Sizemore and a host of European actresses and even Catherize Zeta Jones.
Compare the case of Pamella Lee Anderson with all the others and it's patently obvious that the others, with the exception of Zeta Jones, were mostly manufactured as PR stunts, to give an artifical boost to sagging ratings and breasts.
The reason these tapes are sought after is because they're celebs and because they're rare. If every 2 dime celeb started putting out his own sex tape, following up with the obligatory lawsuit, denials and counter-denials, to be followed by acceptance of guilt and then proceeding to cash in on both the tape and the attendant publicity, how long do you think these tapes are going to be valuable?
I write this because there's breaking news that Kid Rock, after having learned something from his experienc ewith Palella Anderson, is fighting a lawsuit to stop the release of his newest sex tape. Details here. Another point to consider would be that these stars, while vociferously denouncing porn, are making careers out of it. Hey, since everyone's seen you naked and having sex..If you wanna make a properly produced and distributed porn film starring yourself, it would probbaly make you more money and publicity than your fake sex tape did. At least you won't be a hypocrite.
Update : Duh. Now Lindsay Lohan has had her version of a wardrobe malfunction. her boob slipped out of her dress. naturally she's making headlines around the worls.Publicity ain't bad either. It's made the front pages all over the world. Bet a lotta studio heads are thinking - "Hmmm, not bad. The kid's got potential...". So, stunt or spontaneous porn? You decide..
Update : 16th March 2006 : Ok. It's counter-suit time. Scott Stapp decided to file his very own federal lawsuit Tuesday in Los Angeles to stop the sales and promotion of the now infamous sex tape starring the greatly divided rocker, Kid Rock and four women. More details. In other news, Nicole Narain is set to receive 3 Million, if she wins 'her' suit against Colin Farell. Details from TheSmokingGun.
I think both news bits prove my point more than adequately. It's more about publicity than any genuine feelings about invasion of privacy, and it'll make you big bucks in the porn industry.
Update : 18th March 2006 : Seems like the NyTimes is either in tune with what I'm saying, or they have a porn surfer who's been vsiting this site and reading up on sex tapes. Their article on Sex, Lawsuits and Celebrities Caught on Tape : "Celebrity sex tapes surface with such regularity that cynics question whether the stars themselves may be complicit, despite their efforts to suppress them in court, because of the publicity they bring. Although he is suing Red Light to keep his tape out of public hands, Kid Rock told The Associated Press this month: "What perfect timing. I got a record coming up."
True. True. The whole article has nothing much to add to what I've already said above, except some first person quotes and a snazzy picture of Paris Hilton. Just in case you're looking for that kinda stuff, click here.
