Outsourcing the daily activites associated with running a porn site, such as making galleries, submissions, board promotion and content editing can have a serious backlash. But the more important question, I fear, is whether the porn industry needs outsourcing.
Employees vs. Outsourced Workers
What's the difference? Both are paid to do their job, both have no stake in your profits and both do what you tell them to do. The difference here is the filtering down of your requirements - You tell your employee what to do wheras in an outsourced project, you tell the consultant, who tells his manager, who tells the actual guy who's going to do it. Something gets lost along the way and the end product is the vision of a person who has no idea of what you want. This may not be so important in IT or Telecom projects, where the requirement is to put together a working system. But in the porn industry, you need a certain imagination, a feel for what the porn surfer likes and what puts him off.
Cost Cutting
Outsourcing basically means making people in third world countries, with their lowly currencies, do your work at about 1/10th of what you would pay an American or someone in Western Europe. In the short term, outsourcing may seem an attractive option to cut your costs, when you're getting two full time employess across the oceans to work for you for 800 bucks, but if you consider the long term implications, it's not worth it. By outsourcing your projects, you are left with a hollow shell of company ( which is not a piece of a registered paper but a group of dedicated people working towards the fulfillment of a common goal - yours ). |
Adult Industry and Outsourcing
Fact is, it's way too early for the adult industry to jump into outsourcing, for more than one reason. Most important one is - you're probably contributing to an illegal activity, beacuse most third world countries do not condone any form of the porn industry. Secondly, you could do the same thing, without having to deal with a company and unknown employees. How? By hiring people online directly. Think about it - the adult porn industry is running today because people do business online. We do almost everything online, even if we live across the street from each other. Why not hire one of them, people who you have met online, with known capabilities.
What to Outsource?
OK, so maybe you believe that all of the above is crap, and you still want to outsource. You can outsource site design, logo creation, writeups and text for your sites. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT - outsource making galleries, gallery submissions, link trading and affiliate managers. Galleries are your first contact with surfers. Every single gallery has to be designed and content chosen with care and imagination. Link trading, gallery submissions and affiliate management are all about building relations. These relations between your employee and other webmasters and affiliates are the most precious commodity you have. Do not hand it over on a plate to someone else. In trying to fix a working system, you might end up with a broken one. Best way to cut costs is to hire super employees - guys who singlehandedly do the work of 10 people. Give them a stake in your company, and they'll burn the midnight oil. Take a look at Google Labs.
